Molecular Punctuated Equilibrium in the Evolution of Rhopalura ophiocomae (Mesozoa: Orthonectida) 18S rRNA, Hairpin 17
نویسندگان
چکیده
Alternative states of the predicted structure of hairpin 17 in the small-subunit ribosomal RNA genes are described. Each of these structures is characteristic of one or several phylons of animals. For example, one of the alternatives could be found in the rRNA of most Bilateria, but not in protists, fungi, plants, or diploblastic animals. A presumable secondary structure of the 18S rRNA hairpin 17 of a lower multicellular animal, Rhopalura ophiocomae (Mesozoa: Orthonectida), was constructed. It differs drastically from the one of other lower multicellular animals, i.e., Rhombozoa, Myxozoa, and Acoela. The evolution of rRNA fragments according to the principle of punctuated equilibrium is discussed.

Origin of the Mesozoa inferred from 18S rRNA gene sequences.
The phylum Mesozoa comprises small, simply organized wormlike parasites of marine invertebrates and is composed of two classes, the Rhombozoa and the Orthonectida. The origin of Mesozoa is uncertain; they are classically considered either as degenerate turbellarians or as primitive multicellular animals related to ciliated protists. In order to precisely determine the phylogenetic position of t...
متن کاملThe phylogenetic position of Rhopalura ophiocomae (Orthonectida) based on 18S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis.
The Orthonectida is a small, poorly known phylum of parasites of marine invertebrates. Their phylogenetic placement is obscure; they have been considered to be multicellular protozoans, primitive animals at a "mesozoan" grade of organization, or secondarily simplified flatworm-like organisms. The best known species in the phylum, Rhopalura ophiocomae, was collected on San Juan Island, Wash. and...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of Argulus bengalensis and Argulus siamensis (Crustacea: Argulidae) infecting the cultured carps in West Bengal, India using 18S rRNA gene sequences
The present study characterized Argulus spp. infecting the cultured carps using 18S rRNA gene sequences, estimated the genetic similarity among Argulus spp. and established their phylogenetic relationship. Of the 320 fish samples screened, 34 fish (10.6%) had Argulus infection. The parasitic frequency index (PFI) was observed to be high (20%) in Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Labeo bata. The f...
متن کاملA comparative phylogenetic analysis of Theileria spp. by using two two "18S ribosomal RNA" and "Theileria annulata merozoite surface antigen" gene sequences
More than 185 species, strains and unclassified Theileria parasites are categorized in the Entrez Taxonomy. The accurate diagnosis and proper identification of the causative agents are important for understanding the epidemiology, prevention and appropriate treatment. This study aims to discuss the importance of two genes of Theileria annulata 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) and Theileria annulata...
متن کامل18S rRNA processing requires base pairings of snR30 H/ACA snoRNA to eukaryote-specific 18S sequences
The H/ACA RNAs represent an abundant, evolutionarily conserved and functionally diverse class of non-coding RNAs. Many H/ACA RNAs direct pseudouridylation of rRNAs and snRNAs, while members of the rapidly growing group of 'orphan' H/ACA RNAs participate in pre-rRNA processing, telomere synthesis and probably, in other nuclear processes. The yeast snR30 'orphan' H/ACA snoRNA has long been known ...
